Calzones are very easy and quick to make that will feed a crowd and can be an appetizer or a meal. On a Friday or Saturday night get a movie, make a calzone or two and enjoy time with family or yourself!  Ingredient amounts will make two calzones so you can make 2 different versions if desired. When using Sam’s Club dough balls it takes about 6 hours to thaw and double in size. If you don’t have time to allow it to thaw use, 1 – 13 oz. container of Pillsbury Pizza Crust, which will make one calzone.

Ingredients

1 Sam’s Club pizza dough ball thawed or your favorite pizza dough
1 cup of marinara sauce – 1/2 cup for each calzone
6 oz. of cooked mild sausage breaking up any big pieces – 3 oz. for each calzone
6 oz. of Fresh Mozzerella – 3 oz. for each calzone
1 cup of additional marinara for serving

Technique

Place dough ball in a large bowl coated with non-stick cooking spray, cover with plastic wrap, thaw and allow to double in size. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Spray 1 cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Divide dough into two equal parts and gently form or roll dough into two rectangle pieces about 5 inches by 9 inches. Pour 1/2 cup of marinara down the middle of rectangle and add half of the cooked sausage on top of the top of the marinara. Finally add half of the cheese. Try to keep everything in the middle if possible. Then pull both sides of the rectangle to meet at the top and pinch together in a crisscross fashion. Make sure dough is sealed so it remains closed during cooking. Repeat process for second calzone. Place in oven for 12-15 minutes on the bottom rack or until it is golden brown in color. Remove from oven let stand for 5 minutes. Slice into equal parts and place on serving dish with remaining marinara sauce for dipping.
